July 05: Janis Ian

Janis Ian

Janis Ian broke into the music scene in 1964 at the age of thirteen and quickly found her footing with the seminal hit "At Seventeen." That song earned her five Grammy nominations in 1975 (the most that any solo female artist had ever received), and is now reaching its third generation of listeners. She went on to record more than 30 albums, co-author songs for Bette Midler, Kathy Matea, and John Mellencamp, among others, and publish an anthology of science fiction stories.

In her fifth decade of recording, Janis Ian still maintains the highest standards, writing original and well-crafted songs that create snapshots of the human and political experience. A versatile musician, her voice, guitar playing, and songwriting rank her among folk music's best. Reviewers have called her live performances "overwhelming to the spirit and soul," and "drenched with such passion, the audience feels they've been swept up in a hurricane."
